Transport and Mobility

Deutsche Bahn drives green IT forward

The mobility and transport service provider is also driving forward the sustainability transformation in IT.

Outset Situation & Challenge

With it´s Green Transformation Programm, the DB is not only making its products and services more sustainable, but also the way it works. This includes IT systems in particular. In Germany IT is responsible for about 10% of electricity consumption and about 5% of CO2 emissions.

But how does IT become more sustainable and where are the biggest levers for this? In order to clarify this question, the DB Group IT asked Zühlke for support. In a joint project, the potential of Green IT for the railway was to be determined, concrete measures to be derived and a green IT community to be established for efficient implementation.

Approach & Solution

Together with employees from the IT departments of the DB, Zühlke conducted workshops to formulate the goals of a Green IT and to identify the measures that have the greatest positive impact as quickly as possible. Individual interviews were then conducted to explore how best to achieve the goals and which roles in IT are necessary to achieve them.

To this end, Zühlke's experts have contributed their knowledge and experience from Green IT projects with other companies and industries and have created a roadmap with concrete initiatives and measurable results.

Impact & Benefit

The project team of Bahn and Zühlke succeeded in strengthening the motivated IT community and formulating seven concrete measures for sustainable IT within eight weeks. The DB has combined the ideas and enthusiasm of its own employees with Zühlke’s Green IT expertise to achieve its own sustainability goals more quickly.

Based on the positive project results, the CIO Board gave green light for the further implementation of Green IT in order to implement the identified measures and roll them out across the DB Group.
