What is the career path for DevOps Engineers at Zühlke?

There are lots of different career paths for DevOps engineers at Zühlke – but many of our DevOps engineers start out as software engineers before broadening their focus to DevOps.

This progression is a well-established career path for DevOps engineers at Zühlke because our projects tend to involve lots of different teams and moving parts. You’ll naturally develop a holistic curiosity about what’s happening across the rest of the value stream.

This is where your career path as a DevOps engineer starts – by learning about the different roles, technologies and dependencies up and down the value stream. This breadth is exactly what calls to most DevOps engineers. If you’re more passionate about improving the way technical teams collaborate than focusing on the development process itself, then DevOps is probably a great fit for your career aspirations.

What is the career path for DevOps Consultants at Zühlke?

The career path for DevOps consultants at Zühlke involves working with clients in a more strategic capacity – to help them reflect on their current objectives and how their technology processes are optimized to serve them.

While DevOps engineers at Zühlke help our software engineers build better solutions for clients, the career path for DevOps consultants involves helping customers improve software delivery across their pre-existing supplier and solutions – in terms of processes, culture, organization and technology.

Put simply, your career path as a DevOps consultant at Zühlke will involve helping clients build the right thing (before ensuring they build it the right way). You’ll help them develop hypotheses and adopt design thinking to build solutions that meet their true objectives and solve real market needs.

A career of your own

Zühlke supports your career path even if it's the most unconventional one.

Our people have a variety of opportunities to grow their careers vertically into leadership positions or horizontally by broadening their fields of expertise and skillsets. You can even pivot to any other job family available at Zühlke, like Business Consulting or Software Engineering.

How your DevOps career path advances is up to you. We’ll give you every opportunity to learn along the way.

' I love working as a DevOps consultant because it’s easy to quantify the real-world impact of my work. Recently I’ve worked with retailers, airports and banks. Underperforming processes and systems can quickly equate to millions of francs or euros in lost revenue. I like being able to prove the results of my work. '

How do we keep up with DevOps trends at Zühlke?

The principles, technologies and disciplines of DevOps moves fast. Cloud-native technologies (like kubernetes, docker and serverless computing) are particularly popular DevOps trends at the moment, and we support our DevOps engineers to experiment with emerging and maturing DevOps trends to ensure we’re always providing the best recommendations to customers.

Another important trend is the principle of observability. DevOps is about the visualisation – of a value stream, pipeline, KPIs, bottlenecks – it’s impossible to optimize the wider value stream if you can’t see what’s going on (or where you should focus).

Observability is particularly important given the cloud-native DevOps trends mentioned above. As architectures become more complex and underlying systems become fragmented and decentralized, it gets more critical to understand the connections and dependencies of every component in the value chain. Observability brings those relationships to the surface and ensures you can always take the right actions to optimize for the desired outcome.
